Recovery and Rollback in Active Directory
Recovery from accidentally or maliciously deleted objects in Active Directory can be a real pain. First, you may or may not know what objects are affected until someone can’t log in or can’t use email. Then, the scope of the problem might not be immediately apparent. Just one user account might be deleted, or a Group Policy Object might be deleted or corrupted. Worst of all, the damage could affect all of your domain controllers, causing your entire business to grind to a halt—until you fix it.
And that’s where your problems begin. You may have to rebuild all those objects from scratch, one attribute at a time, and there might be thousands of them. The time and manpower required would be enormous.
Of course, you’ve got backup files and a recovery protocol for using them. So, you can save yourself all the trouble of rebuilding those deleted objects. Or, can you? It all depends on how often you do backups and how long ago the most recent one was completed. Active Directory backups aren’t just handy, they’re necessary. But, like so many other tasks associated with Active Directory Software, they take up time, manpower, and resources. So, it’s just not practical to keep up-to-the-minute backups. And this means that, even with backups, a full Active Directory recovery can require a great deal of time and effort. You’ll need to find all of the changes to objects that were made since the last backup and recreate them. Meanwhile, users still won’t be able to log in or use email. And, even after you’ve finished completely restoring your Active Directory, all you can do is hope that unwanted deletions won’t happen again.
What if there was a way to avoid all those headaches? What if you could restore objects and servers in just minutes instead of hours or days? What if you really could preserve all of your Active Directory objects, and their attributes, so that instead of restoring data from an old backup, you could just roll back an object, a server, or a whole forest to a previous state—any previous state? What if all you had to do to make that happen was click a button on a console? What would you give to have that level of control?
Sounds impossible, right? At best, it sounds like wishful thinking, doesn’t it? In fact, that amazing level of control and that magical rollback button are available now as part of the Blackbird Management Suite.
The Blackbird Management Suite is a tightly integrated set of modules that helps IT managers and administrators perform real-time active directory auditing and continuous recovery with one-click rollback, automated reporting, log consolidation and file system auditing—all from a single easy-to-use console.
Blackbird Recovery for Active Directory is the module that performs the seemingly impossible recovery and rollback feats. It’s advanced Continuous Data Protection (CDP) feature stores all changes to your Active Directory in a centralized continuous change log, which frees you from relying on scheduled system state backups. This allows you to focus your recovery efforts exclusively on the affected objects and attributes. And Blackbird Recovery reduces that effort to little more than a mouse click. It’s unique and exclusive Rollback Button allows you to rollback any object or attribute to any previous state, right up to the moment things started to go wrong.
When you combine this amazing power with Blackbird Auditor for Active Directory and its real-time Active Directory monitoring with real-time change alerts, you’ll be able to respond to accidental or malicious deletions immediately. You’ll be able to restore access and permissions before users even know anything is wrong.
